The Reality – At this time, less than one half of one percent of the 3.5 million residents in Puerto Rico have contracted the zika virus.
Recent travelers with Zika symptoms or who have been diagnosed with the virus are advised to protect themselves from additional mosquito bites and to practice safe sex.
There are also reported cases in France and Canada. There is now scientific consensus that Zika virus is linked to severe foetal malformations and serious disorders of the central nervous system and is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
In a statement, Collins said that if proven effective in the field, “the test’s low cost and minimal equipment also means that it can be used for monitoring the spread of illnesses across large populations of people, enabling us to monitor the pathogen as an outbreak is occurring”. The state’s laboratory was approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March for PCR testing, after Malloy directed DPH to develop and begin testing for Zika.
In the absence of a vaccine for Zika virus, Andreadis said community involvement is necessary, including eliminating standing water from your property.
To prevent the spread of the virus, experts said to do not forget to dump standing water, because mosquitos breed in shallow pools of water. Another species that can probably transmit the virus to humans has a wider habitat and is known to be established in metropolitan New York City.

Most famously, Zika is extremely risky for pregnant women, or women who are thinking of becoming pregnant, as the disease can cause major birth defects in an unborn child.
