Fowler plays his way off US Ryder Cup team
Patrick Reed’s win at The Barclays clinches his second straight spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

He finished the PGA Tour tournament at nine under overall despite bogeying his last two holes at Bethpage State Park’s famed Black Course in NY.
Reed overcame an early two-shot deficit and built a big enough lead on the back nine that some nervous shots and sloppy play didn’t keep him from winning for the first time since the 2015 opener at Kapalua. Reed shot a 1-under-par 70 to finish at 9 under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Sean O’Hair and Emiliano Grillo.
Patrick Reed had a crystal trophy, a clear shot at the richest payoff in golf and a spot on the Ryder Cup team.
“We have an extremely talented group of eight automatic qualifiers for this year s US Ryder Cup team”, Love said. The final spot in the American team will now go to Zach Johnson.
Fowler’s tee shot into deep rough left of the 15th fairway led to bogey.
“This is about as tough a test as you get and I did great the first 10 holes”, said Fowler, who also took bogey at the 18th. After a 20-foot birdie putt kept alive his hopes, he promptly found more rough on the 18th hole and finished with a bogey for 74.
A stroke further back at six under were Ryan Moore (69), Jason Kokrak (69) and Fowler, while reigning FedEx Cup champion Jordan Spieth (69) rounded out the top 10, accompanied by Justin Thomas (71).
Fowler and others will have to wait until USA captain Davis Love III picks the final four players on the roster: three on September 12 and the final spot during halftime of “Sunday Night Football” on NBC on September 25.
He will then make his fourth and final pick at the end of the Tour Championship.
“I felt like I’ve played really well all year”, Reed said.
The field will now be reduced from the top 125 points earners to 100 for the second FedEx Cup play-off event – the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Ariya Jutanugarn ran away with the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open on Sunday at chilly Priddis Greens for her LPGA Tour-leading fifth victory of the year, including the Volvik Classic at Travis Pointe in Ann Arbor.
Reed, 26, hadn’t won since a playoff victory over PGA champion Jimmy Walker at the 2015 Tour of Champions.
South Korea’s Sei Young Kim, a two-time victor this year, was second after a 65.
Canada’s Alena Sharp had the best result of her LPGA Tour career, birdieing the final two holes for a 67 to finish fourth at 16 under. Three-time champion Ko had a 69 to tie for seventh at 13 under.
Fowler still hasn’t won in four tries as a 54-hole leader on the PGA Tour, and this one might sting.
Langer played the back nine in 6-under 30, also making birdies on Nos.
Also the 2010 victor, the German star took advantage of Austin and Sutherland both finding bunkers on the 18th in the playoff.

Reed, a member of the 2014 Ryder Cup team that lost in Scotland, extended his cushion over Fowler – his U.S. Olympic teammate earlier this month in Brazil – to two strokes with a birdie on No. 12.

Three birdies in the next five holes saw the four-time major victor move up the leaderboard, but the good work was undone at the par-four 16th.
