Fox greenlights ‘Deadpool’ sequel before release of first

Last night saw the Deadpool movie open with Thursday night advanced screenings, and now it’s learned the film did exceptionally well – so much so that Deadpool now has the best February preview opening ever, beating out the likes of Fifty Shades of Grey (we need a Deadpool meme for that!). The following contains spoilers for Deadpool.

“You’re still here”, observes Deadpool.

Wernick added that the great thing about Deadpool was one could not only break all the rules, but one should break all the rules.

“We certainly are talking about the sequel – we were talking about the sequel while we were making the movie just because when you make a film like this that’s from a serialised source material, you hope that it’s the first of many”. Since his first appearance as a botched version of the Marvel Comics character in 2009’s very bad X-Men Origins: Wolverine, star and producer Ryan Reynolds has all but willed Deadpool into existence, vowing to get the character right this time. We’ve been living with Deadpool for a long time and we have lots of ideas. “Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren, Keira Knightley – she’s got range”. Big secret, shhh. Oh, and dont leave your garbage all lying around. “It’s a total d– move”.

Deadpool will be hitting cinemas in just a few more days, and while the movie has yet to be released, its studio has already greenlit a sequel for the franchise. Less purposefully wacky (and far more violent) than the regular version of the character, the series sees Deadpool become a good guy accidentally, as he’s recruited by a Hydra agent who’s secretly an undercover agent for the United States government. As a baby (sporting telepathic and telekinetic abilities), he was infected with a deadly techno-organic virus, and knowing that there was no cure on Earth, a decision was made to send young Nathan into the distant future where he could be cared for. After 11 years, the Tim Miller-directed gore-and-gag-fest is now on the big screen, and we can all agree it was a triumph of a comic book movie.

Moviegoers who have already seen 20th Century Fox’s action flick starring the Merc with a Mouth have not only confirmed the existence of a post-credits scene, but actually revealed what is shown.
