Fox Lake Lockdown: Illinois Town Under Siege As Massive Manhunt For Police

The search shut down a school Tuesday in the Fox Lake area of northern Illinois.

Covelli advised residents to remain vigilant and watch for anything out of the ordinary. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force has taken over the main investigation and is following leads.

Covelli said schools in the area were closed Wednesday. Gliniewicz was found dead as reports emerge that he was actually chasing on foot three male suspects engaged in suspicious activity shortly before 8 a.m. Later his dead body was recovered from a nearby area, though his weapon besides pepper spray were missing.

Lynch said it’s a “sad fact now” that no one is safe, citing shootings of churchgoers at a Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina, moviegoers in Louisiana, military personnel in Tennessee and two television journalists killed on the air last week in Virginia. “We had over 45 canine units and numerous aircraft”, he said.

He tells the Chicago Tribune that other responding officers found him in a marshy area in the city of Fox Lake and that he was stripped of his gun and other equipment. “That was the original radio traffic given by the officer when called in the suspicious person, and that was the only description provided”, Chief Filenko said.

Sen. Ted Cruz blamed President Barack Obama for creating an environment risky to police, and Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman took aim at the Black Lives Matter movement, claiming the group’s fight against police brutality has morphed into aggression against officers. Helicopter blades pounded overhead as traffic froze and schools went on lockdown.

Gliniewicz was an army veteran who served on the police force for more than 30 years. I know that in their mind they don’t want to be scrutinized, they’re under a lot of variables, they’re trying to do the right thing in a very quick pace.

Dave Torkilsen, a retired captain of the Antioch Fire Department, where Gliniewicz’s brother Mike is a firefighter, was one of those followers and one of Gliniewicz’s best friends. McHenry County Sheriff’s Office also sent resources used to catch the suspects.

Homicides are rare in Fox Lake; the agency didn’t report any to the state in several recent years, according to data kept by the Illinois State Police.

The manhunt for the three suspects believed to be responsible for the death of a police officer in a suburb of Chicago continues and now investigators said they are relying heavily on the public for help.
