Van Susteren, meanwhile, took to Facebook to explain that she took advantage of that much-discussed clause in her contract allowing her to leave now owing to Roger Ailes’ exit as Fox News chief.

In another development related to Fox News, Greta Van Susteren, host of the nightly “On the Record”, will leave the network after 14 years, according to a statement. “It’s confusing to Scientologists to belong to an organization that accepts any blame”.

She also said that he was punishing her because she complained about a hostile work environment.

She claimed she was sacked from the network after complaining about his behaviour.

Fox reportedly paid Ailes a million severance package.

In another development at Fox News, longtime anchor Greta Van Susteren is leaving the network.

Van Sustern has stood by comments she made in an interview shortly after Carlson filed the sexual harassment lawsuit, saying: “I did not defend Roger Ailes nor did I condemn him”.

Carlson released a statement of her own about the settlement on Tuesday. “I want to thank all the courageous women who came forward to tell their own stories and the many people across the country who embraced and supported me”. She claimed that Ailes harassed her for a year and a half.

The conservative TV station said in a statement that Ms Carlson “exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism” during her time as an anchor.

Since Carlson filed her sexual harassment suit this summer, more than 20 other women have come forward with similar tales of misconduct by Ailes, including Megyn Kelly. According to Politico, Ailes is considering suing NY magazine, which originally broke the story and reported on it as it unfolded.

In the lawsuit, Tantaros’s attorney Judd Burstein describes Fox News as a “a sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult, steeped in intimidation, indecency, and misogyny” and describes Ailes as a “sexual predator” who “did not act alone”.

Van Susteren joined Fox in 2002 after more than a decade as a legal analyst at CNN.

Berger, who is a co-chairman of the public relations company PMK-BNC, has a client roster which includes veteran journalist Barbara Walters and New York-based writer Lena Dunham. Fox News Channel said it was a result of poor ratings on her afternoon show, “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson”, but the anchor – a 1990 Stanford University graduate and the victor of the 1989 Miss America pageant – said she felt her contract wasn’t renewed because she continued to refuse Ailes’ sexual advances. It’s about a culture – a television news network that played an undeniable role in reshaping American politics over the last 20 years.
