Fox’s R-Rated ‘Deadpool’ Dominates Domestic Box Office For Second Straight Week
Fox’s “Deadpool” remained in first place at the box office, riding a 55 million USA dollars wave in estimated box office sales this weekend, and was the most-popular movie in North America for a second week. And certainly, with its astronomical gross, other R-rated superhero movies have become not only possible but a likelihood; clearly, audiences responded to the chutzpah and stylistic excess of the film.

Risen, starring Joseph Fiennes as a powerful Roman military tribune tasked with investigating reports of Jesus’ resurrection, hopes to beat Kung Fu Panda 3 for the No. 2 spot, but it’s going to be close.
Meanwhile, the Jesse Owens biopic, Race, opened to $7.3 million from 2,369 locations.
In just two weeks, the movie has grossed over $491 million at the global box office and has been met with critical acclaim. Take our poll below!
Remaining at number-two for another week was FOX’s second breakaway hit “Kung Fu Panda 3”.
In fourth place, The Witch took in a terrific $8.6 million despite a much lower theater count than Risen, which is a good sign for distributor A24.
This week, the field becomes more crowded with three additional new releases opening widely: Fox’s “Eddie the Eagle”, Open Road Films’ “Triple 9” and Lionsgate’s “Gods of Egypt“, which came under fire previous year after promotional posters and a trailer were released revealing that the cast consisted of primarily white people playing characters set in the African country. “Deadpool”‘s total is an estimated $235.3 million since it opened.
This photo provided by courtesy of A24 shows Anya Taylor-Joy as Thomasin in a scene from the film, “The Witch”. The film drew a reported $8.6 million this weekend. That’s not a great showing, but against a $20 million budget it’s a solid start.
Last weekend’s freshman comedy How To Be Single is in fifth place just ahead of new release Race.

Rounding out the top 10 are Zoolander 2, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, The Revenant and Hail! That being said, the movie got a rather dismal C- Cinemascore, so the celebration may be shortlived, and it indicates the slowmoving, atmospheric picture is not for everyone’s tastes. Its $31.7 million domestic total and $24.1 million from overseas add up to $55.8 million to date worldwide.
