The announcement concludes an anxiety-filled process for a Republican Party that worked aggressively to improve its debates ahead of the election season. The broadcast sponsor announced that 10 candidates would have opportunity to debate, who were picked based the highest average ratings in the five recent national polls released by Tuesday end. “There’s no ideal solution”.

9-11 p.m. (ET) Thursday: Top 10 candidates in national polls, as determined by Fox News.

Republican officials were particularly concerned about Fiorina’s status, hoping she would help balance Hillary Rodham Clinton’s push to rally women to her candidacy.

Trump has vaulted over the Republican establishment in recent polls with a double-digit lead.

New Yorkers seeking the Republican nomination in 1916 were former President Theodore Roosevelt, who was returning to the GOP after running as a third-party candidate in 1912; former Sen.

Trump said he was attacked viciously by some of his rivals and that every attack he made was a “counter-punch”.

“I think it shows that the American people aren’t thrilled with what’s going on in Washington D.C. As we’ve seen the last six or seven years with current administration, people are craving something different and I think Trump represents a lot of that”, Patinakis said.

But some critics complained that the national polls used to select the debate participants had too small a sample size, with too wide a margin of error, to adequately assess a candidate’s standing. Forty percent said it would make no difference.

We’ll know officially at some point after the polling cutoff late Tuesday afternoon.

While new Republican darling Donald Trump easily secured top spot, a pair of governors just squeaked into the Top Ten.

The debate in Cleveland marks the beginning of a new stage in the Republican nominating contest, where candidates will likely sharpen their first contrasts with one another and the field’s front-runner, Trump.

It’s hours away and counting until the first Republican presidential debate Thursday night.

Republican pollster Frank Luntz said of the Fox debate last month that “if you’re not on that stage, you’re irrelevant”. The billionaire businessman who declined to participate in Monday’s gathering is poised to take center stage later in the next meeting.

Trump said he was not planning to go on the offensive.

There’s also the guarantee of finding like-minded voters; 47 per cent of voters who described themselves as “consistently conservative” said Fox was their main source of news about government and politics, according to a 2014 survey by the Pew Research Centre.

“There has never been four (same-party presidential contestants) from a particular state in my research…We really haven’t seen this in the modern political era”, said Ostermeier.
