France launches attack alert app ahead of Euro 2016

It will also provide advice on how to stay safe, with information tailored to each particular situation, the ministry added.

The idea for the app came about last November following the attacks in Paris.

Paris-On Friday, Euro 2016, which is hosted in France, will be launched in 10 of the European country’s cities amidst serious security tensions.

The US State Department gave a similar warning last week, adding that “unaffiliated entertainment venues broadcasting the tournament in France and across Europe” were also potential targets.

The warning came a day after Ukraine announced the arrest of a suspected far-right French extremist with a massive weapons cache who was allegedly planning a string of attacks to coincide with the tournament. The Foreign Office website, updated on Tuesday, advised fans travelling to support them to be vigilant at all times and follow the advice of French authorities.

Hollande said on Sunday it would be incomprehensible if transport strikes were to disrupt the Euro 2016 soccer tournament, raising pressure on the militant General Confederation of Labor Union to call off the action.

But with France still reeling from two major terrorist attacks, one in January 2015 and another one ten months later, the country remains on a high terror alert.

“There are different events taking place throughout London, there are fan zones, there are screens going up for people in crowded places and in parks to watch the football”.

“We’re a key part of the planning”.

A 25-year-old man arrested at the Ukrainian-Polish border on 6 June planned “15 acts of terror” and meant to blow up bridges and highways across France during the month-long tournament, which kicks off on 10 June at the State de France in St. Denis, just outside Paris.

On the subject of hooliganism, Lambert said there were some matches that French police were more concerned about than others – Germany against Poland next week, for example – but denied that England versus Russian Federation in Marseille was one of them, despite what happened at the 1998 World Cup when English fans clashed with locals. “This threat exists, but we must not be daunted”, he told French radio.
