France’s Muslims strongly condemn Paris attacks

Muslims here in London have joined the world in mourning the loss of life following the Paris attacks. There were Muslim players playing for the French and German football teams.

I agree wholeheartedly that condemning violence against innocent souls is an appropriate Muslim response as it falls into the category of enjoining the good and forbidding evil (al-amr bil ma’roof wa annah’yi an al-munkar).

Muslim community leaders quickly denounced politicians and the massacre certainly attributed the violence on the extreme Islamic State movement.

Among those huddling and holding hands, staring at the growing pile of flowers in front of the establishments’ shattered windows, was 18-year-old Ryan Abeichou, a third-generation French Muslim whose grandparents came to Paris from Tunisia.

“We hear talks about closing the border … let’s not punish the victims twice”, said Niwad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American Islamic Relations. “Those are the important parts of Islam that people just largely ignore”, he said.

A Canadian Muslim group is advising Muslims to be vigilant about the potential for a backlash against them in the wake of Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris.

In the 11th arrondissement, outside a pizza place where five people were gunned down in the attacks, Javier Valdeperez was laying flowers and lighting candles. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility.

The multiple terror attacks in the French capital Friday night killed 129 people and injured another 352. Authorities said that seven attackers blew themselves up, while the eighth was killed by police.

However, Europe must not bow down to these barbarous acts and allow the dehumanization and hatred of its own people.

“In our experience, following these kinds of tragedies or when Islam or Muslims are portrayed negatively in the media, we do tend to notice a spike in the number of hate crimes and hate incidents that are reported to NCCM”, Ihsaan Gardee said in an interview on Sunday.
