Fraser leads a day of firsts for Olympic golf
The golf course is more than good: Gil Hanse might not have been the first name to spring to mind when they handed out the rights to build a course in Rio de Janeiro just for the Olympics.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Rickie Fowler astutely pointed out that the United States is the only country in the Olympic golf tournament that can sweep the podium and capture all three medals.
And, for him, it’s not money. Fighting through pain, he managed to go through the pommel horse routine and helped Germany advance to the finals.
“Usually on the green, you’re at worse [a] two-putt”, Fowler said. They’re more of a gathering. They put all their heart in there.
One thing to say for Reed, though: If he’s comfortable with the black hat, he’s even more comfortable wearing the red, white and blue.
“He’s just such a down to earth kid”, said Brian Kelley, who works at the Stadium Golf Center in Keany Mesa.
By comparison, all the top male tennis players except injured Roger Federer went to Rio. We didn’t do it for money. We want the Olympics to succeed. We make an effort to protect discussions from repeated comments â either by the same reader or different readers. Above all, it made him realize “that I didn’t do anything wrong by coming here”.
It was a disappointing showing for the only country to qualify four players in the 60-man tournament, especially considering all are presently ranked in the top 20 in the world, with two in the top 10.
“I’ve never been so happy with a third-place finish in my life”, said Kuchar, who made the team only after Jordan Spieth opt out of the Olympics. When it did become an Olympic sport, the lights went off and I said, ‘How awesome, I can’t believe I now potentially have the opportunity’. He has been hanging out with other athletes and teams and attending as many events as possible each evening.
“They don’t make anything”, he said. Think about that – four years they’re waiting just to run ten seconds. “Some guys show that it’s easy, and that’s what we do”. “If it wasn’t golf, just something”. Many cited worries about the Zika virus as motivation to quit.
Their active schedules would seem to dismiss preconceived security concerns.
Golf provides a comfortable lifestyle. Kaymer knows he has it good.
“It’s inspiring to watch fellow US athletes do well, compete, get a medal, gold, whatever it may be”, said Fowler.
“But the actual work?”
“But obviously he’s playing nicely – you can get on a good stretch around here. I want to go to every event”.
Kaymer can only hope his peculiar habit of producing great moments in even-numbered years continues. We grew up wanting to win the PGA Championship, win the Grand Slam, do what Bobby Jones or Jack Nicklaus or Arnold Palmer did. His par putt under enormous pressure gave Europe the decisive point in its Ryder Cup victory in 2012. Ask Phil Mickelson how it feels to have a record six runner-ups at the U.S. Open.
Maybe, but squirrels hardly ever weigh 150 pounds and are capable of carrying away Simone Biles, gold medals and all. There’s no guarantee that golf will return to the Olympics after 2020. I’m exhausted of talking about the golfers who aren’t here.

Fowler wishes they were here as well, but respects their decisions not to be. That doesn’t change a thing.
