Clubhouse leader Marcus Fraser has described his eight-under 63 at the Rio Games as the round of his life.

“It’s great to walk in here and have the Olympic record”, said Fraser, who now leads the Asian Tour money list.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play a few good rounds along the way but that was the most special, I must say”, he said. The putter was definitely hot today.

After a 112-year absence from the Olympic schedule, golf will make its long awaited return to Olympic competition this week in Rio. “It all added up to 63, which is always nice”. Earlier this year, he won the Maybank Championship Malaysia, his third European Tour victory in a career that began in 2003.

Rose drew the biggest cheers of the day when making the first ever hole-in-one in Olympic Golf history with an ace at the fourth.

The Americans didn’t quite have the morning they’d hoped for: with the exception of Matt Kuchar, all of them finished over par. Patrick Reed shot a one-over par 72, Bubba Watson a two-over par 73 and Rickie Fowler a four-over 75 and is tied for 56th in a 60-player field.
