Freaky play involving Wainwright blows up loss to Mets

Adam Wainwright has steadfastly tried to keep his chin up during this challenging season, but that’s becoming more and more hard for the longtime St. Louis Cardinals pitcher.

It doesn’t matter how much power the Cardinals have at the plate, they can not swing their way out of the quicksand created by inconsistent pitching and unreliable defense. Wainwright was the victim of shoddy defense.

Martinez allowed one run on three hits in seven innings against Houston his last time out.

“When I seem to miss it seems to go right down the middle and it seems to get out of the park or off the wall”, deGrom said.

“We had trouble getting anything going (against Lugo)”, manager Mike Matheny said.

After Lugo’s exit, Jim Henderson gave up a two-run shot to Brandon Moss, who also hit a solo shot off Josh Smoker in the eighth.

Wainwright (9-8) lost his glove trying to tag out Yoenis Cespedes in a freaky play leading to the Mets’ four-run fifth.

Wainwright appeared to make the tag on Cespedes, but Cespedes jarred the glove off Wainwright’s left hand. But even after a replay review, umpires still called Cespedes safe.

The Mets put the game out of reach at 7-0 with a four-run fifth that was highlighted by Alejandro De Aza’s three-run homer.

“I love how starting pitching set the tone, ” Matheny said. “I don’t know what else I could have done there; there was another runner on base”. Wainwright, for his part, also looked like he has never seen it before.

After losing Jonathon Niese to the disabled list on Wednesday, New York had to pull rookie Sean Lugo after five scoreless innings on Thursday when he sustained a right calf cramp while warming up for the sixth. The five RBI is a career-high for the outfielder. “He doesn’t have to like it, but he accepts it and gets himself ready”.

Alejandro De Aza homered and drove in five runs, helping Seth Lugo earn his first major league win.

The Mets took two of three to win their first series at Busch Stadium since 2008. In his last two starts, deGrom has been knocked around for 13 runs on 25 hits in 92/3 innings.

NY had 15 hits and capitalized on some shoddy St. Louis defense to win the three-game series and drop the Cardinals to 29-35 at home.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Enny Romero earned his first major league save, relieving with two outs in the ninth inning and fanning Boston slugger David Ortiz to give Tampa Bay a four-game split. James Loney finished with three hits for the Mets, who got two hits apiece from De Aza, Rivera, Flores and Asdrubal Cabrera.

Mets: OF Jay Bruce (calf) was out of the lineup after leaving Wednesday night’s game with cramps. Jon Niese is out for the rest of the season after surgery Thursday to fix the meniscus in his left knee. Cardinals RHP Trevor Rosenthal (right shoulder inflammation) started a throwing program Tuesday and will throw off flat ground for two weeks before further evaluation.
