The closest national parks to Houston are the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas (about a nine-hour drive) and Big Bend along the Rio Grande (eight and a half hours away).

The park service is also celebrating with a massive social media campaign encouraging people to get out to the parks. The 87,500 acre area, which was donated by the founder of Burt’s Bees, will now be taken care of by the National Park Service. Those areas include national parks, monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, seashores, recreation areas, scenic rivers and trails.

At the other end of the park, a portion of the road leading to Yellowstone’s South Entrance remained closed because of a wildfire.

The park is also in the midst of the superintendent’s “Hike 100 Challenge”, which encourages visitors to hike 100 miles in the Smokies in celebration of the National Park Service Centennial this year. Taylor tells 47 ABC, “It’s not just places like Assateague Island National seashore but there are places like the National Mall and Edgar Allen Poes home and the Grand Canyon and working farms and anything that you can think of that is unique is probably protected by the National Park service”.

Will you visit a national park in the US this year? You sure do look good for your age.
