Freedom 251: Telecom Min summons Ringing Bell management

The company said it has received 3.70 crore registrations on Day 1 and 2.47 crore on Day 2 (as of 1949 hours).

Earlier this week, Ringing Bells launched the world’s cheapest smartphone for Rs 251 amid great fanfare.

Amidst controversy surrounding on cheapest smartphone priced at Rs 251 by Ringing Bells, the company on Monday promised that it will apply for Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) before selling the device. “We would clearly mention that the Final Freedom 251 manufactured/assembled in India would be to identical specs – i.e.no change”, he added.

Announcing the closure of booking, the company said, “We are humble and extremely grateful for your overwhelming response and trust”. Since the launch, it has already come under scanner for the unrealistic pricing and even company’s credibility to deliver at that price. The notice on the website read: “We appreciate and acknowledge that we may not have been able to meet the needs of all, but will definitely look forward to serving you again in the next phase”.

According to a report by the The Economic Times, Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had asked IT Secretary Aruna Sharma to check the credentials and claims of the company, Ringing Bells, after it made the offer.

While talking to a leading daily, Mohit Goel, said not only will the company make the phones available at Rs 251 but will also make a profit of Rs 31 on each handset sold. The phones were sold in Salharour village, Dadri Road in Bhangel. “If the product is actually shipped, the 25 lakh unit will neither affect market nor prospect of our company”, Datawind President and CEO Suneet Singh Tuli told reporters here. He said that the company is taking only online orders.
