Freeform orders Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger to series
After Thursday morning’s surprise announcement of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, a new tv show ordered straight-to-series by Freeform (an ABC cable channel formerly known as ABC Family), the network has now released an official synopsis. Tandy Bowen and Tyrone “Ty” Johnson are two teens living in New York City who, after being exposed to an experimental drug, are given unique superpowers. Marvel also is producing animated series for Disney XD.

Created by Bill Mantlo and artist Ed Hannigan, Cloak and Dagger first appeared alongside Spider-Man back in the early 80’s. Although Cloak and Dagger recognizes that Tandy and Tyrone live in a complicated world – further complicated by their feelings for each other – they realize that together, they are the ultimate power couple. With shows like The Flash, iZombie, and Arrow dominating the CW’s airwaves, Marvel often felt like it was finding it harder to impress fans with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter.

Disney’s Freeform network primarily features programming aimed at teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14 and 34. Freeform has announced, via Variety, that teen heroes Cloak And Dagger will have their own show. In contrast to competitor DC, which has various continuities spread across all different networks, Marvel has kept all of its live-action properties within the same cinematic universe. At one point, Cloak and Dagger seemed like it might be a good fit for the mystery Marvel TV project that John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) has been developing since last year.
