Fremont: One injured seriously in I-880 crash

A motorcyclist was hospitalized, and traffic brought to a crawl Monday morning after a crash on the Sunol Grade, the California Highway Patrol said. A major accident on westbound Interstate 80 involving a busload of children from a Berkeley summer camp has closed two lanes of traffic and is expected to keep them blocked for approximately two hours. All lanes of northbound Interstate 15 were reopened as of 8:20 a.m.

The children were on their way to a field trip in Oakland when the bus collided with a few other cars. “We had a total of 23 patients that were transported and an additional 17 that were not injured”, Berkeley Fire Department Asst.

There were 50 people on the bus, Whitten said, and the children aboard were ages 5 to 15. The CHP said at least four other vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened around 10 a.m.at the Ashby Avenue exit.

Officials said it is not immediately known if the children’s parents have been contacted. The youths, members of Camp Kee Tov in Berkeley, were heading to Middle Harbor Park in Oakland, according to the CHP.
