After going missing for more than 12 hours, a rookie member of the Fremont Police Department may find himself in the doghouse.

The dog – named Niko – escaped from his secure yard in San Jose’s Willow Glen area between 10 p.m. and midnight Saturday, police said.
A little before noon, Fremont Police announced that Niko had been found safe in the Guadalupe River creek bed near Almaden Road and Branham Lane. He was wearing a metal collar but no name tag. Our media partners at the San Jose Mercury News report the 16-month-old puppy escaped from its owner’s yard in San Jose by digging under a fence.
San Jose and Fremont police officers as well as Santa Clara police search-and-rescue crews participated in the search for the black-and-tan German Shepherd.
Having spent only a few weeks with Fremont police, Niko is the department’s newest police dog.

Police didn’t say when Niko would return to work. Police did not say when he would resume his duties.
