“My husband collapsed, I saw him through the seats”. The attacker was eventually overpowered by other passengers, including three American friends on vacation.

Moroccan national Ayoub El-Khazzani, 26, was armed with an AK-47, box cutters and lots of ammunition, and caught the attention of Mark Moogalian when he went into the restroom with a suitcase. Moogalian was shot attempting to tackle the gunman, his wife said.

“I felt a giant pain in the back”. “The moment that the gunshots occurred and I saw a man bloody like fall to the floor I thought to myself, I may die today”.

“I do consider him a hero and hope he gets a full recovery”, said Harry Moogalian.

The 51-year-old American musician and teacher, who has lived in France for more than two decades, was seated across from his wife in Wagon 12 on the high-speed train that had pulled out of Amsterdam’s main station just over two hours earlier.

Norman said that, at the award ceremony, he and French President Francois Hollande had a conversation in which they discussed the importance of everyone participating in the fight against terrorism. Moogalian remains hospitalized in stable condition and will receive the Legion of Honor later.

He tackled the Kalashnikov assault rifle off El-Khazzani, who then drew a sidearm and shot him in the neck before taking back the rifle, his sister has revealed.

And while Harry Moogalian says they probably saved many lives, one of those heroes also saved his cousin Mark Moogalian. Four men are credited with saving countless lives during the train attack after Moogalian took the Ak-47 away from the suspect.

Mark and his wife Isabelle were sitting in carriage 12 with their dog quietly sleeping under the table.

“He noticed somebody going into a bathroom with a case”, Greg said.

Mr Moogalian runs a language school from a houseboat in the outskirts of Paris, according to the school’s website.
