French authorities declare the Calais migrant camp empty
More than 4,000 migrants, who had come to Calais hoping to cross the short stretch of sea to Britain by trying to leap on trucks and trains or walk through the tunnel, have been bussed out of the camp and relocated around France.

But Ms Naughton said this was not a viable option as most hotels would be full due to the vast number of police officers and journalists staying in Calais this week, as well as the legal issues that would arise.
“It’s critical that safeguards are in place”.
“I want to go to England, that’s my dream”, said 24-year-old Adam.
CALAIS, France (AP) – The grim camp known as “the jungle”, a symbol of Europe’s failure to come to grips with its crisis over asylum seekers, is no more. But the U.K.is far from done with the process.
And migrants and refugees could be seen still walking with their belongings towards the warehouse, while other groups sat waiting in the sun in the road leading to it.
Upwards of 1,000 unaccompanied children are being housed temporarily at an on-site park of specially fitted – and heated – shipping containers.
The fires followed several nights of clashes this week between police and migrants who refused to leave the camp, as French authorities began bussing residents out by the thousands and demolition teams started tearing the camp down.
Dorothy Sang, of Save The Children, meanwhile, told the BBC that hundreds of children had not been able to register and enter the area for minors.
As part of the camp’s clearance, 3182 adults have been transferred to centres around France since Monday and 772 unaccompanied minors have been moved to a container park in the Jungle serving as a temporary shelter, the Interior Ministry said.
“I can’t stress enough how frightened children are”, said Sang. It’s risky. There is a risk they will find another means to get out of there.
“Children should not be brought over during this distressing time”.
Mignonet invited Prime Minister Theresa May to visit the town, and even offered to give her a covert ride from the airport.
Dorothy Sang, Save the Children spokeswoman, said there were concerns over the fate of minors.
“They claim benefits and housing, and all we get is the British-funded wall and fences”.
During a question session with Parliament, Rudd addressed why the United Kingdom didn’t start the process of interviewing and registering children in Calais earlier.
Despite the pronouncement, migrants were seen milling around the edges of the camp, although officials said they would stop processing people by Wednesday evening. “These children have been left unprotected”.
Success in closing down the camp carries heavy political implications for French President Francois Hollande, who is deeply unpopular and has yet to decide whether to seek re-election next year.

Many of the Calais migrants have family already in the United Kingdom and most had planned to seek work, believing that job prospects are better in Britain.
