Park rangers discovered the three French nationals, who have not been identified, while on routine trail patrol approximately 1.5 miles from the Alkali Flat trailhead. “Otherwise, he could have been the victim as well”. He was treated for heat exposure before being turned over to child protective services. Temperatures had soared above 100 degrees and it is believed she may have succumbed to the heat. The French consulate was contacted and the boy’s grandmother flew from France and took custody of him Thursday afternoon.
Officials are reminding hikers not to begin a trek when the temperature is at or above 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Park Rangers do offer water to hikers as they enter the second gate of the trail. It is also suggested to bring at least one-gallon of water per person and energy snacks, as well as a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and lightweight, loose-fitting clothing with long sleeves, and long trousers to help protect skin from the Sunday. An official said to always tell someone who is not with you where you will be hiking and when you plan to return.
