French Open champion Garbine Muguruza suffers Wimbledon shock
Before this tournament, she hadn’t qualified for the main draw at a major since Wimbledon a year ago.

Garbine Muguruza, the second seed and French Open champion, was knocked out of Wimbledon in the second round yesterday, losing 6-3, 6-2 to Slovak qualifier Jana Cepelova.
Muguruza reached last year’s Wimbledon final but lost to Serena Williams 6-4, 6-4. “I felt a little bit exhausted”, she said. “I feel empty a little bit, and I start to be sick”, said the Spaniard.
But she was undone by 22 unforced errors and hitting just nine winners in a flat performance.
Among the women, French Open champion and No. 2 Garbine Muguruza is set to play on Court 1 against Jama Cepelova. “But my energy wasn’t there”. I am experiencing a lot of things so fast.
Cepelova says she deserved the win. “It’s a tough day today”.
Karolina Pliskova, Sara Errani, Jelena Jankovic, Kristina Mladenovic and Andrea Petkovic were among a number of seeds to tumble on Thursday. With the exception of 2014, she has previously got no further than the second round in four attempts.
Radwanska struggled through her second round match against Croatia’s Ana Konjuh today, but narrowly escaped defeat when her opponent slipped on a tennis ball and rolled her ankle in the third set; the final score was 6-2, 4-6, 9-7.
Japan’s Kei Nishikori came from behind to down France’s Julien Benneteau to book his place in the Wimbledon third round. It is also the second straight year the reigning Wimbledon runner-up will fail to make the third round. Cepelova had a first-serve percentage of just more than 40 percent but still outplayed Muguruza with 14 winners and 12 errors.
Serbia’s Viktor Troicki made his case for the greatest Wimbledon rant of modern times as he slipped to a five-set defeat to Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas. I know every time I step on the court, well, they want to beat me so much.
But if the 36-year-old American felt any frustration, it did not obviously distract Williams from the task at hand, and a twirl by the net for the crowd at the end of the match showed her satisfaction.
“I didn’t have winners flying past me, I wasn’t outplayed, I let her back into the match”.
Sock’s compatriot Sam Querrey, the 28th seed, eased past Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 for the dubious honor of facing defending champion Novak Djokovic for a place in the last 16.
Eugenie Bouchard of Canada slips while returning to Johanna Konta of Britain during their women’s singles match on day four of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, Thursday, June 30, 2016.
The unseeded Johnson reached the third round for the first time after a 6-1, 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over Jerome Chardy.
The sixth-seeded Canadian, who reached the semifinals at the All England Club in 2014, had 25 aces in the match.
“The long days in the locker room the last days were just brutal”, Isner said. “You can only play so much putt-putt in the locker room with your friends and what-not”.

The eighth-seeded Austrian, who won a grass-court tournament in Stuttgart this month, lost to Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) on No. 1 Court. After having treatment, she played on but Radwanska held on for victory.
