French Open washed out for 1st time in 16 years

Djokovic is now making his 12th visit to the tournament. Murray is leading the head-to-head series 7-3, including 2-1 on clay and 4-0 in their last four encounters dating back to a collision at this same tournament in 2012.

There have been several delays to play at the 2016 French Open, but Monday saw the most significant one yet.

Williams is the defending champion and she is chasing history.

The 47th-ranked Canadian says her mentality used to be “my awesome strength” and that “I feel like I’ve not used that as much in the past year or so”, during which the 22-year-old Canadian’s ranking has slipped. Initially rescheduled for Monday, the earliest they can now be completed is Tuesday, when quarterfinals are scheduled to start.

Nadal has won 200 of 230 matches in majors, a winning percentage of.870. It’s a Grand Slam.

While all the three other grand slams – Wimbledon, the USA and Australian Opens – have at least one show court with a roof, there is no hope of a covering appearing at Roland Garros before 2020.

What has been key to your preparation for the French Open this year?

Ivanovic, who won the title at Roland Garros in 2008, is seeded No. 14 this year. Spanish 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro faces unseeded Yulia Putintseva. And 2011 U.S. Open champion Stosur – wearing a green long-sleeved shirt against the chill of temperatures in the 50s (about 15 degrees Celsius) – was better throughout Tuesday.

Their match originally began Sunday, when Halep took the opening set and went ahead 3-0 in the second, just three games from victory, before play was suspended because of rain.

Shockingly, Gasquet had never been to the Roland Garros quarters prior to this fortnight.

“That’s why I really wanted to win this match, and of course I’m really happy because I did”.

Defending women’s champion Williams’ opponent was due to face Ukraine’s 18th seed Elina Svitolina. The Swiss broke back in the seventh game, broke Bouchard again with a backhand victor for a 5-4 lead, and served out the first set.

Venus slipped to her knees at the baseline on one point and produced only six winners, compared to 24 unforced errors.

The last time a washout at the French Open occurred was on May 30th 2000 – exactly 16 years ago to the day from Monday’s washout.

Bid officials are planning to use the venue both for the Olympics and Paralympics, with tennis competitions, wheelchair events in tennis, basketball and rugby as well as five-a-side soccer matches being hosted in the western Paris venue if the city wins the hosting rights.

Murray, meanwhile, progressed after beating John Isner in straight sets; the result means that no American man has reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros since Andre Agassi did so in 2003.

That changed on Monday as rain delayed the start of play and, with the forecast poor for the rest of the day, organisers made a decision to cancel all play at 1.40pm local time.
