Up to three gunmen have barricaded themselves inside a Primark store in a suburban Paris shopping centre and are said to be holding at least 10 people hostage.

All traffic in the area around the shopping centre has been stopped and all other nearby stores have been closed.

French media reported that three armed men were on the run following the police raid, adding that the people had taken refuge in a canteen.

No shots were heard, said the police source.

The assailants entered the store around 6.30am local time in what police believe was an attempted robbery, another police official said.

Despite getting all hostages out, police were unable to trace the gunmen, who it is thought fled soon after police were called.

Le Figaro reports that an employee of the store sent a text to a friend saying he was being held hostage.
