French taxi drivers resume anti-Uber strike, disrupt traffic
“We have received reports of isolated intimidation and harassment of our partner-drivers at the Oval – a commercial building complex – in Nairobi’s Westlands”, Uber Africa’s spokesperson, Samantha Allenberg, said in a message sent to partner-drivers.

After more than three days with life at a virtual standstill in the nation’s capital and elsewhere up and down the East Coast, the cities hit hard by a massive snowstorm were getting closer to their normal… Several taxi operators at the meeting expressed unhappiness at how they have to obey certain rules that they don’t necessarily disagree with, but ride-hailing firms like Uber, which is regulated by the state, doesn’t have to.
Police said the bus driver was arrested.
The drivers are protesting at what they see as unfair competition from private hire cabs such as Uber, and the government’s inability to enforce laws created to protect their industry.
Citing Paris police, The New York Times reported that 1,500 taxis “had blocked or delayed traffic around Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports, as well as Porte Maillot, a major intersection in western Paris, and near the Ministry of Economy and Finance”.
In France, air traffic controllers went on a walkout and taxi drivers disrupted traffic by burning tires on Tuesday in protest against labor conditions. Lufthansa canceled 10 flights between Germany and France today and EasyJet canceled 35.
The one-day action was joined by civil servants and teachers protesting against proposals they fear will affect their pay and career advancement.
Dozens of protesting taxi drivers tried to march onto an eight-lane bypass but were pushed back by police with tear gas.
Air traffic controllers were demanding for more personnel to be recruited to reduce the workload on existing staff, who the unions say were overworked.
The controllers’ union also wanted exemption from proposed changes to how their salaries are calculated, fearing a reduction in their purchasing power, according to the Local.
Some drivers set pre-dawn bonfires which were put out by firefighters on Tuesday morning.
Taxi drivers meanwhile have a separate beef – competition from taxi app company Uber and other non-licensed chauffeuring services.

Schools had to contend with no-shows by teachers protesting against the reorganization of language learning and other aspects of secondary schooling, and also to demand that the government loosen a wage cap.
