She said it was unclear what prompted the fight and that Stone was the only victim.

Spencer was trying to defend a friend when he was stabbed multiple times and it was orginally thought that he wouldn’t survive. “He is now in stable condition”.

Police have not released a description of the suspect, the station said.

Mr Stone said: “I turned around and he (the gunman) appeared to have what looked like a AK-47”. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the assault, which occurred near a bar.

Stone, a U.S. Air Force Airman, made headlines when together with Skarlatos and their friend, Anthony Sadler, overpowered a gunman on a European train who started to open fire.

Armed with a pistol, an assault rifle and 270 rounds of ammunition, Khazzani is accused of seeking to massacre passengers on the Amsterdam-Paris train.

“Everybody send prayers out to the stone family today”, he wrote.

Local news site KCRA reported that Stone suffered “multiple stab wounds to the torso”, and that due to the severity of his injuries, police had started a homicide investigation, expecting the American hero not to recover from his injuries.

They previously had been awarded France’s highest honor by President Francois Hollande. Last week, Skarlatos left rehearsals for TV’s “Dancing With the Stars” to rush back to his hometown of Roseburg, Oregon, after a gunman killed nine people at the community college Skarlatos had attended.
