Many local people in Sangin are resentful of the Afghan government troops, whose military operations destroyed homes and farms.
The soldiers were targeted as they moved through a village near Bagram Airfield, the largest US military facility in Afghanistan, NATO and Afghan officials said.
Fierce fighting has frequently happened in the last two years, between Afghanistan government troops and the Taliban fighters.
Our correspondent said that about 100 Afghan special forces soldiers are believed to have dropped into the Sangin some time on Thursday and that they were now waiting for reinforcements and supplies to be trucked in. They’re still able to conduct attacks in the middle of Kabul, as we saw only a little over a week ago when they attacked the Spanish Embassy in Kabul.

JUDY WOODRUFF: The fighting in Helmand is one part of a Taliban offensive across much of Afghanistan that’s testing US strategy.
Alarmed by the Taliban advances, Britain has sent extra personnel to NATO’s Resolute Support advisory mission in Helmand in a bid to help struggling local forces.
Fighting around the town has escalated in the past week, and by Wednesday the militants said they had captured all of Sangin, pinning down government troops in an army barracks.
According to reports, a spokesman said Helmand is not only the province where Taliban have made gains. Deserters who are not reported so that officials can pocket their salaries.

Afghan commanders have repeatedly requested more helicopters, and closer air support and intelligence from surveillance aircraft and at least two airstrikes have been carried out this week. And I think the past six months where the Taliban have really gained territory, even though they haven’t managed to hold any important districts – this shows that the Taliban are still able to make the countryside, especially, very insecure.
