An ex-convict accused of shooting and wounding two unarmed officers inside a central California jail is behind bars, facing charges of attempted murder and possessing a handgun as a felon, authorities said.
“He’s a warrior”, Gomez told the Fresno Bee.
Botti said there are no immediate plans to change security arrangements in the lobby of the Fresno County jail but that officials will review what happened Saturday and decide whether changes need to be implemented. Fresno County sheriff’s deputies and Fresno police officers stand on scene near an ambulance after reports of an active shooter in the main lobby of the Fresno County Jail in downtown Fresno, Calif., Saturday, Sep.
An armed deputy and an armed correctional officer have been stationed in the lobby of the central California jail where an ex-convict opened fire and critically wounded two unarmed officers, a sheriff’s spokesman said Monday.
Correctional Officers Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan remained in critical condition on Sunday morning after they were struck in the head and neck area during Saturday’s incident near a secure area of the Fresno County Jail. Officers did try to use a stun gun on Vang but it was unsuccessful in stopping him.
The jail was closed to visitors after the attack. He also has been placed on a parole hold.
“In 1998, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison on multiple rape charges involving teenagers aged 14 and under”. His parole officer communicated to Mims that Vang had no known criminal violations since then.
Vang initially fled, then gave up when he was hit with a taser.
The two officers were each shot once in the neck and head area after Thong Vang, 37, entered the jail lobby and began to exhibit freakish behavior.
Sheriff Margaret Mims says Vang opened fire as the officers tried to get him to sit down.
The Sheriff’s Office said about 15 people, including children, were in the lobby during the time of the shooting.
At that point, the suspect started pacing back and forth near a metal detector that leads to a secure area of the jail, authorities said. Vang was reportedly injured during the altercation although it appears to just have been scrapes and cuts that he was treated for.
