Frustrated French Open chief confident of roof by 2020

The reigning Roland Garros champion was forced to dig deep in his 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Lukas Rosol in the first round, but he didn’t face quite as much trouble in his 7-6 (7), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Daniel in Wednesday’s second round. Eventually warming up on a gray, chilly afternoon, and twice coming back from a set down, Wawrinka edged 59th-ranked Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday to sneak into the second round.

Andy Murray completed his ninth career comeback from two sets down, erasing that big deficit and beating 37-year-old Radek Stepanek 3-6, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the French Open.

Indeed, the Japanese youngster has only ever played 32 full ATP Tour-administered singles matches, losing 23, and he has already lost 10 of 14 matches above challenger level this season.

When play was finally suspended Murray had repaired some of the damage but still trailed 3-6 3-6 6-0 4-2. His victory marks his very first win at Roland Garros in the main draw and perhaps shows that Cilic would have been better resting last week as opposed to playing in Geneva, where he made the final.

On another rain-affected today, Japan’s fifth seed Kei Nishikori secured a 6-1, 7-5, 6-3 win over Simone Bolelli of Italy.

Stanislas Wawrinka remains on course to defend his French Open title following a second round win against Japan’s Taro Daniel.

But Muguruza recovered to advance 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and set up a second round with French wildcard Myrtille Georges. The first-round match was tied at two sets apiece before rain postponed play on Sunday.

“Thankfully that’s still the case”, Wawrinka, who stunned world number one Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, said.

After a delay of more than 2 1/2 hours, play has finally started at the French Open.

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka and world No. 2 Andy Murray were both troubled in their respective first round matches on Monday, when the day two competitions at Roland Garros were delayed by rain.

On the women’s side, No. 4 seed Garbine Muguruza beat Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. She lost on 76 percent of her second-serve points and was broken six times in the blowout.

The champ takes the frame 6-1.

The Scot was starring down the barrel of his first Grand Slam first-round exit since the 2008 Australian Open (and first at the French Open since 2006) when he fell two sets to love down, but hit back hard to take the third set 6-0 and was leading 4-2 in the fourth when play was called off.

Former US Open victor Marin Cilic is the upset of the day, going down to Marco Trungelliti in four sets.

That figure, just a shade under 40 percent of the 128-man field, easily eclipses the previous high of 41 from this year’s Australian Open and could have been higher if not for the withdrawal of 17-time Grand Slam victor Roger Federer.
