FSU’s Derwin James to have surgery, will miss key clash against Louisville

Following a win over Charleston Southern in Week 2, the Florida State football program announced star defender Derwin James would be forced to miss some time after undergoing surgery to fix a torn meniscus. An MRI confirmed James did not sustain any ligament damage.

James hovered near the line of scrimmage for much of FSU’s game against Louisville past year, using his speed to ensure that Louisville’s Jackson stayed mostly corralled in the pocket.

He was injured in the second half of FSU’s 52-8 blowout over Charleston Southern on Saturday.

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher did have some good news, at least for James’ outlook going forward.

When pressed on how long the team’s starting safety could be out, Fisher said it could be anywhere from two weeks to six weeks. James was having surgery Monday afternoon, and Fisher said the surgeons would not know how they would fix the damage until surgery began.

As little learners grow up, they need more specific supplies to get them through the school year. There has been plenty of back and forth over why James was still in the game with the Seminoles up 42-6 over their FCS opponent.

Fisher believes “College Gameday” coming to town for the game is just further proof the ACC is a “premier conference”.

Now, though, all Florida State and Fisher can do is hope the youngster has a speedy and healthy recovery. James is, according to one coach who spoke with Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports, the closest thing the college game has seen to Sean Taylor. We’d come to find out that the injury he suffered was a meniscus tear, so you knew that he would be out a substantial amount of time – possibly even for the rest of the season. Sophomore A.J. Westbrook is in line to replace James in the secondary. “It’ll just take time to get it out”. Usually, me and him, we play on the same side, but now he’s not there.
