Two people were killed when massive fire engulfed a godown in the slum area in Mumbai’s Kandivali after a series of cylinder blasts on 7 December, NDTV reported. 16 fire engines were rushed to the spot in Damunagar. A child, reportedly under 10 years, was declared dead on arrival by the medical staff.
It took around 4 hours for fire tanks to put out the blaze. A fire department official described the incident as category 2 fire.
The local people shooted the video of fire blazing out in slums and godowns and shared it on Whatsapp. The place is said to house a godown of various items. Unverified reports from the area suggested that 25 to 30 gas cylinders had exploded. The building is close to the Western Express Highway.
More than 100 huts were destroyed, said the Reuters photographer at the scene, adding that residents were picking through the smoking remains of their homes as fire fighters doused the last of the blaze. “Emergency services have also activated their station there”, a police officer said.
