Fuel & Tires: Previewing NASCAR’s championship weekend

Harvick has been fairly successful at the track, with one win (which came last season), six top five finishes, and 12 top ten finishes in 14 career races at Homestead.

The first round was an adventure for championship contender Jeff Gordon, who needed two runs to advance to the second round.

“Kevin Harvick has been the favorite since before we rolled into Daytona in February”, Fox Sports analyst Darrell Waltrip said.

All Harvick has to do is finish ahead of his three competitors and he’ll make history. Sixteen drivers qualify for the Chase either by winning a race or by points.

Since when does Harvick care what others think?

Born in California, Gordon and his family moved to in when it became apparent he was a special talent. “But in the end you don’t want to be the guy who was disrespectful at Jeff Gordon’s last press conference, or say something that is…”

“I’m just really happy about how we qualified, so I’m hoping that we can take that fast race vehicle and do a few more with it (in Saturday’s practice) and Sunday, and we’ll see what happens”.

“I mean, I look at it as more exciting”, Gordon said this week. But Harvick has had the best finish among these four drivers in 17 races, including four times in the Chase.

Gordon, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and defending Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick are the only four drivers remaining in the Chase for the championship.

Like Truex, Busch has been consistent during the Chase, finishing outside the top 15 only twice.

And while Harvick, Gordon and Busch have an array of prominent Fortune 500 high-dollar sponsorships, Truex’s sole primary backer is the company owned by team principle Barney Visser, which is how Furniture Row gets its name. There’s nice multiple grooves, but I started on the pole here a year ago, and I know that that kept us in the game and up front in a big way. “I’m definitely just trying to enjoy the moment, stay focused and make the most of it”. But you can’t measure the desire they’ve got. The payback ultimately cost Logano a spot in Sunday’s finale.

“We wish we were a part of it but unfortunately a couple mechanical things took us out of this Chase, but we’re going to hopefully go out with a bang”, said Hamlin, who jokingly referred to himself as “Mr. Irrelevant”. “And I’ve just learned not to worry about those”. “It made me reflect on what this weekend means”.

Kenseth has been apologetic about intentionally wrecking Logano at Martinsville, Va., as payback for an incident two weeks before at Kansas.

The final race of the NASCAR season will be the Ford Ecoboost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

In the final event of the Eliminator Round at Phoenix, the race was called early due to rain. Then he won at Sonoma.

Of course we all know that there are quirky variables in every NASCAR race. “We can’t compare what we’ve done at other races”. I want it really, really bad. To battle back from that, with all the wins that we’ve had along the way and good runs in competitive cars, is remarkable at this stage.

“We’re not going to react to anything that’s part of the traditional part of hard, aggressive racing”, France said.

“When I sat at his house and we met and talked about doing this, that’s what we both said is, we wanted to be in a position where we could race for a championship, and not only for one year but do it for multiple years and keep things going”, crew chief Rodney Childers said.

Mars announced earlier this week it had extended its M&Ms sponsorship with Busch and Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Toyota team for the next several seasons, but Busch only revealed his extension on Thursday.
