Fulham in talks with former Chelsea man Clarke

What started as whispers a few days ago has now turned into a fully fledged report with a national newspaper claiming Reading boss Steve Clarke will leave the club tomorrow.

Clarke, 52, has made the Royals this season’s surprise packets in the Championship and they are eighth, just four points off the play-offs.

It is understood that Curbishley, the former Charlton and West Ham boss, wants the Fulham head coach job full-time, but the club are reluctant to give it to a man who has been out of football management for over seven years.

Clarke brought in several new players during the summer transfer window and led Reading to second in the Championship during a five-match unbeaten run.

It is thought Clarke has no interest in leaving Reading at this stage, though he does have strong links with that part of London, having been Jose Mourinho’s assistant at Chelsea between 2004-2008.

Sky sources reported earlier this week that Clarke was on a list of three candidates to succeed the sacked Kit Symons along with Pearson and Exeter boss Paul Tisdale.

Meanwhile, Reading FC are being linked with non-league duo Dan Sweeney, 21, of Dulwich Hamlet and Tower Hamlets youngster, Randell Williams.
