Full moon to make rare Christmas Day appearance
NASA predicts that the next full moon to fall on Christmas Day will not occur until 2034, while the asteroid, named 2003 SD220 after the year of its discovery, will return in 2018.

Santa is going to have some extra light to guide his way this Christmas – a full moon.
Since December’s full moon is the last of the year and marks the onset of winter, it is also called the Full Cold Moon. While the moon will look full when it rises at sunset on Christmas Eve, it won’t be full until 5:11 a.m. on Christmas morning.
The full moon will not be the only celestial event coinciding with Christmas. It has since continued to leave its impact on Earth’s living organisms and its hypnotic tides.
Your comment will be submitted for approval by an administrator. “Geologic history of the moon and earth are intimately tied together such that earth would be dramatically different planet without the moon”. The experts at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory stated the asteroid will safely pass by Earth on Christmas Eve.
The Christmas Eve asteroid has stirred fear mongering that, because of its huge size, it will cause earthquakes.
Asteroid 2003 SD220 is shaped like one of the popular finger foods.
It is also a fun time for Santa Claus as the full moon highlights his travels across the night sky.
“By obtaining radar ranging measurements at each observing opportunity, it may be possible to detect non-gravitational perturbations due to the Yarkovsky effect”, NASA researchers wrote in a blog post earlier this month.
For astronomers and those who follow horoscopes, Cancer is the moon’s native sign and so this is a time when emotional connections, relationships and family are illuminated and intensified – making Christmas the ideal time for it to happen.

The folks at EarthSky say the asteroid, at its closest, will flyby at almost 7 million miles away, unlike asteroid Aphophis, which is 14 years away and will come within the distance to the moon (a mere 246,000 miles).
