The killing helped fuel protests nationwide over the treatment of African-Americans by U.S. police.
“I don’t know anybody who wants to see the kinds of deaths that we’ve seen over the past week”, Mr Obama told Cameron Sterling. She said she wanted aggressive policing to end. Police said in a search warrant that officers saw the “butt of a gun” inSterling’s pocket during the arrest and that he tried to reach for it during the altercation.
Police said he had a gun.
Sterling leaves behind five children.
Funeral services are scheduled for later on Friday. People pray during Prayer Vigil organized by Myron Smothers at Memorial Tower on the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge, La., Monday, July 11, 2016.
The deaths sparked outrage and protests in many cities across the US. Authorities said they found out about the plot after they arrested three suspects in the burglary of eight guns from a pawn shop. They arrested one suspect on the scene and then tracked down two others.
Malik Bridgewater, 20, is scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court on Friday.
About 200 people were arrested in Baton Rouge during protests last week with demonstrators accusing the police of heavy-handed tactics.
Bridgewater told investigators his motivation was to sell stolen items for cash, an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wrote in an affidavit filed in federal court.
But state and local law-enforcement authorities said the stolen guns were part of a credible threat to harm police officers.
According to the lawsuit, officers broke up peaceful demonstrations by using excessive force, arresting people without probable cause, and attempting to provoke protestors with physical and verbal abuse.

Albert Carter, Sterling’s 44-year-old half-brother, wore a tie with a grinning Alton on it. He said he hopes Sterling’s death prompts police reform in Baton Rouge. Castile was shot by an officer during a traffic stop Wednesday night, as he sat in the passenger seat of a auto.
