The Auburn police officer was gunned down last week after a traffic stop.

Tarentino was shot during a traffic stop shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.

Amid the heartbreak over the death of Officer Ronald Tarentino, a photo has emerged that captures both the feelings of the local community and what it means to be a law enforcer in 2016.

U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern, D-Worcester, spoke on the House floor Thursday morning to honor Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr., a member of the Auburn Police Department who was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty on Sunday morning.

She thanked the children of Auburn and the family’s hometown of Leicester for their support as well as the first responders, doctors and nurses who tried to save her husband’s life. Tarentino was an Auburn police officer who hailed from and began his career in nearby Leicester. As reported by Boston CBS affiliate WBZ, on Tuesday, the Auburn varsity baseball team had Tarentino’s initials and badge number sewn onto the bat of their hats in memoriam, an honorary nod they will carry into the state playoffs which begin this weekend.

Two of Tarentino’s three sons are in high school.

The trooper joined the mourners at Tarentino’s funeral at St. Joseph’s Church in Charlton on Friday morning to pay his respects to the fallen officer. Zambrano was found hiding in a closet in an Oxford apartment.

Leicester Police Chief James Hurley said Tarentino was a dedicated officer with a constant smile and an infectious laugh whose father served as a police officer in Medford for more than 30 years.
