When police arrived on the scene, Long shot only at officers and “completely dismissed” civilians who were walking through the area, Col. Michael Edmonson, superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, said in a news briefing.

The mayor of Baton Rouge has signed up to run for a congressional seat as his city is embroiled in the aftermath of a police shooting, protests and the slaying of three officers who were ambushed by a gunman.

Police Lt. Robert McGarner struggled to keep his emotions in check as he stepped to the microphone to address the crowd. You put others’ safety before your own, and you remind us that loving our country means loving one another.

The diaries are in addition to a self-described, handwritten manifesto that an OH man says was emailed to him by Long less than an hour before the shootings.

“It’s protest with a goal”, Norman said.

Gov. John Kasich has ordered that all flags be flown at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds in Ohio July 22 to honor the Baton Rouge attack victims.

Edwards says he plans to participate. Services will start at 2 p.m. Long traveled to Baton Rouge in a white rented Chevy Malibu and stayed several days planning his attack, according to investigators.

The group condemned recent violence but also called for more community policing tactics.

Rev. Lee Wesley says the city needs to look at how potential law officers are vetted.

Sunday’s ambush of police by Long, a 29-year-old black man, came almost two weeks after a police officer shot and killed Alton Sterling, a black Baton Rouge resident, outside a convenience store in the city on July 5.

Friends and family of Jackson, 32, were mourning the 10-year veteran of the police force that relatives described as a ” gentle giant” and a ” protector” after he and another two law enforcement officers were shot and killed Sunday morning by a gunman. He also knew one of the officers killed this week, East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s Deputy Brad Garafola, a repeat customer at the store where Pierce works.

Bonnette says Miles wanted to express his support and discuss his appreciation for the courage police show in putting their lives on the line to protect their communities.

Obama wrote the letter as he remains under intense criticism from some police officials and others who accuse him of fostering a climate that has led to the intentional killing of law enforcement officers.

“We may not yet know the motives for this attack, but to be clear”, Obama continued. He killed three and wounded three other officers before he was killed in a shootout with police.

After the five Dallas police officers were killed by a man who authorities said was angered by police fatal shooting, Long posted a video on YouTube saying he was “not gonna harp on that…it’s justice”.

Obama said there is great interest among police departments nationwide in receiving additional training to deal with active-shooter events and to decrease tensions before violence occurs, but that more resources will be necessary.

“We can and do provide the best quality law enforcement that we can but we cannot be held responsible for the social issues such as poverty, lack of mental health services, unemployment, and abject poverty”, the group said.
