Funeral, Visitation set for Gordie Howe

That was entirely in character for the man who dodged Father Time for so long, who grudgingly ended his NHL career at 43 after winning the Cup four times, the scoring title six times and most valuable player honors six times, and came out of retirement at age 45 to play in the World Hockey Association alongside sons Mark and Marty, his passion burning as hot as ever and his elbows still brutally sharp. But with the passing of a life comes the reflection of an wonderful legacy; one in which one thing is clear; Howe was the best to ever hit the ice.

Over 25 years later, Hartlieb – who wore No. 9 like Howe – watched his own banner raised to the rafters of Germain Arena.

The word “gentleman” was used again and again by those around hockey to describe Howe. “He will always be Mr. Hockey”.

The Detroit Red Wings are encouraging fans to attend Tuesday’s event, pointing out in a release that a “significant part of the cathedral’s seating on Wednesday morning will be reserved for friends and family of the Howe Family, as well as other hockey dignitaries attending the service”. He won four Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings.

Howe was also with the Whalers during their merger with the National Hockey League, where the 1979-1980 season would be his last. “Michelle and I send our condolences to his sons and daughter, his family, and his loyal fans from Hockeytown to Hartford to Houston and across North America”.

He referred to his play as “poetry in slow motion” late in his career, a far cry from his score-and-smash style in his 20s, 30s and early 40s. I’ve kind of heard too that people who go into free agency, they have their short list of two or three teams they think are in the market. The only player to have broken those records is Wayne Gretzky.

“Unfortunately we lost the greatest hockey player ever today, but more importantly the nicest man I have ever met, ” Gretzky tweeted.

There is a hat trick named after him, the “Gordie Howe Hat Trick”.

Boston Bruins Hall of Famer Phil Esposito said Howe gave him six stitches on his nose in one of his first few National Hockey League games. Gordie Howe, the hoc.

“I got him”, Esposito said, and a smile came across Howe’s face.

“Obviously he was done playing by the time I was even born”, Crosby said.

I never got a satisfactory answer.

Cheveldayoff joked hockey fans everywhere know what a Gordie Howe hat trick is a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game. Rutherford remembered walking into the Red Wings’ locker room in 1970 – only to see Mr. Hockey sitting there.

“I was standing halfway between the blue line and the goal line and they shot the puck in”, Kelly said.

We played together on an WHA All-Star team, and I would pepper him with questions.

But this year there were good series in every round, basically a good game on every night and at least one excellent series per round.

I saw a lot of Red Wing games at the rickety old Olympia Arena, sitting in the highest row at 75-cents a ticket.

“He just had a special way about him”, Rutherford said.
