In a statement Fury’s team said: “Tyson has, this week, been declared medically unfit to fight”. So far the exact details of Fury’s injury are not known.

Their re-arranged rematch was scheduled to take place in Manchester on October 29, 11 months after their original bout in Germany.

One attempt at a rematch has already been abandoned because of an ankle injury sustained by Fury and it is now understood the fight will be called off for a second time.

Klitschko himself has suggested that he will take Fury to court over negotiations for the rematch, and his camp is likely to be distinctly unimpressed by another rearrangement.

Sources close to the fight maintained that it is a postponement rather than a cancellation, though it remains to be seen if the rematch will ever now happen.

Frank Warren, whose BoxNation channel was due to broadcast the fight, told Sportsmail: ‘The fight has been postponed but will be rescheduled.

Fury is now subject of a UK Anti-Doping investigation after failing a drugs test.

If so, Fury will face being stripped of his trio of belts ahead of an upcoming UKAD hearing over a failed drug test in 2015.
