A homeless man was attacked Monday in Melbourne, Fla., while he was swimming in a creek, according to local authorities. The attack happened under a USA 1 overpass, in a fishing spot popular with the area homeless community.

Wildlife officers were searching for the alligator.

Melbourne police Commander Dan Lynch tells CBS affiliate WKMG the “alligator came up and grabbed” the man in the Indian River in Brevard County.

He struggled with the alligator in the water and his loud screams were heard by police who were training nearby. “We found him there on the shore”, Lynch said, of the man, who was conscious and in pain. There were significant gashes near his neck. Police then radioed to dispatch for the Melbourne Fire Department to respond.

Several Florida Wildlife Commission officers are in boats still canvassing the river for the alligator.

“I stay out of the water, you know, because I know there’s alligators in there”, Andrea Falk said. The man’s current condition has not yet been released.
