FX’s “The Americans” Finally Earns Major Emmy Nominations

“O.J. Simpson” is a close second with a total of 22 nods. Recognized for three separate projects is Laurie Metcalf for HBO’s dearly departed Getting On and Louis C.K.’s Horace & Pete, as well as for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series (The Big Bang Theory).

The Emmy Awards, voted for by the 20,000-plus members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, are the top honors for US prime-time television.

Additional, the show received an Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series nominated as well as one for Outstanding Drama Series. And compared to the Oscars, this year’s Emmy slate is a much better reflection of America at large – and the medium the awards represent at its best.

Winners of the Emmy Awards, voted on by the 20,000-plus members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, will be presented September 18 at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

The Emmy awards were announced earlier today, and while genre shows are getting more recognition than ever thanks to things like Game Of Thrones, most of these shows are still getting nominated in the categories you expect to them to be, and that includes Gotham.

“The Daily Show”, which swept the Emmys for years when Jon Stewart was at the helm, was not nominated for outstanding talk show. The show is nominated for best comedy. Looking ahead to this particular awards show should start with a quick look back.

Amazon collected fewer accolades but still made gains, with 16 nods this year versus 12 in 2015.

After four seasons, FX’s critically-acclaimed series finally got the Emmy love it has long deserved, earning top category nods for its much-praised fourth season, including one for Drama Series and first-time Emmy nominations for stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.

Broadcast and cable are far from irrelevant.

Black-ish star Anthony Anderson was expected to repeat in the comedy category, but the nominations for his show and for co-star Tracee Ellis Ross were very welcome additions.

“It is a serious understatement to say that I am somewhat stunned”, Harington said of his nomination. “When hope becomes reality, that’s what it is”.

The actor adds, “I was just a 9-year-old kid growing up in Compton, California, with a dream and this is the dream that I had”.

Randall Park and Constance Wu, the stars of the Asian-American family comedy “Fresh Off the Boat”, are contenders for lead acting bids. Limited Series or Movie, Lead Actress: Felicity Huffman, “American Crime”; Lili Taylor, “American Crime”; Kerry Washington, “Confirmation”; Kirsten Dunst, “Fargo”; Audra McDonald, “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill”; Sarah Paulson, “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”. “I owe my performance whatever it is to him”.

“Game of Thrones”, which won a record 12 Emmys last fall including best drama, gets the chance to claim its second top award.

The drama series nominations were mostly what you’d expect: last year’s victor “Game of Thrones”, plus “Better Call Saul”, “Downton Abbey”, “Homeland”, and “House of Cards”. The Good Wife was shut out in its final year of eligibility, and neither Rhea Seehorn nor Uzo Aduba made the supporting-actress list for Better Call Saul and Orange Is the New Black, respectively.

What did you think about the nominations for the Game of Thrones cast? Silicon Valley has been a notable exception in this regard, but this year marked a turnaround with a lead actor nomination for Thomas Middleditch.
