The United States and Russian Federation are working to finalize a cease-fire deal for Syria that would allow more humanitarian aid into the war-ravaged country, as world leaders meet in Hangzhou China for the Group of 20 Nations Leaders Summit.
President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to keep up negotiations over a cease-fire agreement for Syria.
It said the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development will lead a “global forum” on steel overcapacity and identify uncooperative tax havens. But that is half of China’s estimated excess capacity of 300 million tons, so deeper cuts would be required to bring it in line with demand.
With the summit taking place after Britain’s vote in June to exit the European Union and before the US presidential election in November, G20 leaders had been expected to mount a defence of free trade and globalisation and warn against isolationism. Many leaders are already looking ahead to January, when either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump assumes the business of state.
“Obviously it has something to do with the refugee question”.
The meeting began on a diplomatic high note following a joint announcement Saturday by Obama and Xi that their governments had submitted documents committing them to carrying out the Paris climate agreement.
“We [with Obama] basically had a discussion to look into details”.
“We are determined to break a new path for growth to inject new dynamism into the world economy”, Xi said, adding that a G20 Blueprint on Innovative Growth was unanimously adopted at the summit. The journalists were kept in a bus outside G20 summit venues without food, The New York Times reported.
Obama’s hopes of smoothing relations with China got off to a turbulent start after a series of airport scuffles after his arrival. CCTV’s reporter has a brief wrap-up of the event – from the bilateral meetings on the sidelines to the impressive historical beauty of the host city.
China levelled responsibility at the United States and journalists for the fracas.
During his three-day stay in Hangzhou, Obama met with the leaders of China, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Russian Federation – all countries with complicated but integral relationships to the US.
