Obama’s last scheduled trip to China before leaving office got off to an awkward start soon after Air Force One landed in Hangzhou when a Chinese security official blocked National Security Adviser Susan Rice on the tarmac and yelled at another us official trying to help journalists get closer to Obama.
“The President reaffirmed that the United States will work with all countries in the region to uphold the principles of worldwide law, unimpeded lawful commerce, and freedom of navigation and overflight”, the White House said.
Chinese officials blocked USA travelling media from watching the president disembark, shouting “this is our country” at a US diplomat when she tried to argue this was not the norm for presidential arrivals.
Unlike a host of leaders who arrived ahead of him, Mr Obama was deprived of the traditional red-carpet walk off the plane on Saturday after Chinese officials failed to provide a rolling staircase to Air Force One.
U.S. President Barack Obama offered Britain little hope of a fast-track post-Brexit trade deal on Sunday, but said he would work to ensure the economic relationship between the two does not unravel after the British vote to leave the European Union.
When a White House aide complained about the situation a Chinese official shouted back, “This is our country!”
UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon on Sunday spoke highly of the ratification of the Paris climate change agreement by China and the USA, calling for accelerated efforts from other countries to join the ambitious accord.
Rice met Chinese dissidents before her last trip to China in late July, when she held talks with President Xi Jinping and other senior officials. Rice, one of the highest-ranking officials in U.S. government, seemed less than amused when asked about it by a reporter.
Speaking of the event at a press conference later, he said: “It is true that, not for the first time when we have come here, there ends up being issues around security and press access”.
“We’re not there yet, and, understandably, given the previous failures of cessations of hostilities to hold, we approach it with some skepticism, but it is worth trying”, he said. However, Obama said Britain will need to explain what the Brexit decision may in fact entail, both for the United Kingdom and Europe.
Acknowledging that point, President Obama said, “We’ve got a lot of planes, a lot of helicopters, a lot of cars, a lot of guys. You know, when we bind ourselves to a bunch of worldwide norms and rules it’s not because we have to, it’s because we recognize that over the long term, building a strong global order is in our interests”. “And so I wouldn’t over-crank the significance of it”.
“China is willing to work hard with India the maintain the hard-won good position of Sino-India relations”, Xi added.
Chinese officials said earlier that China would propose a plan to boost trade and innovation through regulatory changes and closer government cooperation.
“If you sign a treaty that calls for global arbitration around maritime issues, the fact that you’re bigger than the Philippines or Vietnam or other countries.is not a reason for you to go around and flex your muscles”, Obama said.

“These are hard negotiations”, Obama said. She and other German officials have insisted that Ankara must end its ban on German lawmaker visits to 250 German soldiers working at Incirlik Air Base as part of the USA -led coalition’s air strikes against Islamist State targets.
