G20 Night In Beijing Kicks Off Conversation About Global Economy
The United States will also call for the Group of 20 leading economies to keep their steel industries from getting so big that factories are underused, Lew said in a preview of the US message to the September 4-5 G20 summit in Hangzhou, China.

Temer will also meet with fellow BRICS leaders: South African President Jacob Zuma, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and President Xi at the sidelines of the G20 summit.
Other experts believe that China, considered as a key partner for Africa could also help in ensuring the continent is better represented in global forums.
“Undoubtedly, the Hangzhou G-20 achievement will strengthen China’s position and influence in global affairs, to better match the country’s rapidly growing economic power and potential to contribute to the world”, said Professor Wang Yong, director of the Centre for International Political Economy at the Peking University.
Last week, China’s top diplomat called on Japan to be “constructive” at G20, with the deeper fear in Beijing that Japan is angling to become involved in the South China Sea dispute as well, at the behest of its ally the United States.
China took over the G20 presidency of the group in December 2015.
Excess capacity is a global problem requiring global solutions, Zhu said, echoing a line from a communique issued by G20 finance ministers and central bankers in July.
However, he clarified that, although China’s role in global governance will expand on par with its economic competence, it still would not challenge American global dominance, which covers far more areas than merely the economic front.
“It seems very unlikely that Chinese authorities would take major action on the South China Sea before the G20”. And with the G20 being on track to deliver on its previous promise to address the economic fundamentals, this is the right time to modernize the global rules on governance of “inclusion, innovation, invigoration and interconnectedness”.
“We all pin hopes on this summit to inject new life and impetus for world economic growth”, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said this week.
China hopes to avoid discussion of such issues while using the summit in the eastern city of Hangzhou to burnish its image as a responsible major nation whose support is essential to solving the world’s ills.
“There are obviously good reasons to avoid diplomatic trouble before a prominent summit”, he said.
