If Thanksgiving is about appreciating what you already have, then Black Friday is about fixing what you don’t have yet – which is arguably the most American idea, ever.

Somewhat interestingly, the ICSC survey found that approximately two-fifths of spending planned for the Thanksgiving weekend will be on merchandise not intended as holiday gifts. “We are encouraged by the national retail projections and look forward to shoppers taking advantage of our popular selection of stores as they complete their holiday gift list”.
Is Thanksgiving the new Black Friday?
In an NJ.com poll, 67% polled said retail stores should be closed on Thanksgiving.
According to an article in ThinkProgress, “a survey of 40 self-identified Kmart employees in 18 states conducted by Coworker.org and shared with ThinkProgress, [showed that] 95 percent said they still don’t know their schedules for Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, and 70 percent say their managers haven’t even told them what the store’s hours will be”.
Employees at the Deptford Mall started an online petition to demand that the mall stay closed for Thanksgiving.
If you’re committed to deals, getting to the store earlier is better.
So you finally make it to the register and the cashier asks if you want to open a store credit card for an additional 10 to 15 % off your purchase.
“I’m not heartbroken at all, I think it’s kind of tacky to be open on Thanksgiving Day anyway”, said one downtown shopper. While pre-Black Friday sales may soar compared to a year ago, NRF says it is possible that actual Thanksgiving weekend sales will be softer in 2015 compared to 2014. Don’t cave into the emotional pressure that might lead to a regrettable purchase. Small Business Saturday, an annual event launched by American Express in 2010, falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, giving local retailers yet another opportunity to leverage the Black Friday section of local newspapers. Make sure you shop soon because typically jewelry prices go up closer to the holidays. That’s about one million more than a year ago.
