Ninth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also advanced, downing Jack Sock, the last American man left in the draw, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (7/9), 6-2.

The 48th-ranked Sevastova twisted her right ankle on the opening point of the second game and clearly was hampered by that. At the ensuing changeover, Tsonga was visited by a trainer and had his left leg taped below the knee.
Roberta Vinci, last year’s U.S. Open runner-up, is back in the quarterfinals. But she eliminated 2004 champion Svetlanta Kuznetsova in the second round and No. 8 Madison Keys in the fourth.
The men’s quarterfinals Tuesday were No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. Wozniacki lost in the tournament’s semifinals in 2010 and 2011. Until this tournament, she never had been past the third round in 17 appearances at majors.
Fifty-two winners from Nadal – whose attacking response saw him come out a victor on 35 of 48 forays to the net – were not enough.
Marc Lopez teamed with Rafael Nadal to win the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
The loss ends a thrilling run from Pouille, who defeated 14-time grand slam victor Rafael Nadal to get to the last eight in a grand slam for the second time. “It lacked to me something in terms of tennis level”, he said after the match against Lucas Pouille. “I needed to serve better in some moments”.
She made her first major final here a year ago at age 32, stunning Serena Williams in the semis to thwart the American’s Grand Slam bid.
Vinci is now ranked No. 8.
Vinci has been bothered by an injured left Achilles tendon and struggled physically at times Sunday.
“I really don’t want to be someone who says ‘I’m retiring, ‘ then, after two weeks, ‘No, I’m not retiring.’ ‘I’m retiring.’ ‘I’m not.’ I don’t know”.
“It makes me laugh because honestly, if I could do it today, today if I had a 360 smash, definitely I would have done it”, he said.
“When it happens it will be an incredible feeling, because that was also one of my dreams when I was a kid”. ‘I just felt so good (and) it was going to be even better because it was going to be indoors.
Gael Monfils has reached the US Open semi-final after ending the impressive run of his compatriot Lucas Pouille.
It is the first time since 1947 that three Frenchmen have reached the quarterfinals of one Grand Slam.
Monfils’ athleticism was a major factor in his dominant win over Pouille, who admittedly was worn out after playing three straight five-set matches, including what he called “the best win of my career” over Rafael Nadal in the round of 16 on Sunday.
Pouille, meanwhile, ran out of steam.
No 24 seed Pouille came into the match off the back of three consecutive five-set matches, the last of which was a stunning upset win over 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal on Sunday.
Monfils hasn’t yet lost a set at this year’s Open.
He began the year by making it to the quarter-final of the Australian Open and also won his first ever ATP World Tour 500 Series singles title in July.
If Kerber reaches the final, then Williams must win the title top stay on top of the pile. This is only his second Grand Slam semifinal, with the other in 2008 at the French Open.
On Tuesday, she was two points away from taking the first set when she served for it at 5-4, but she got broken there.
Then Pliskova broke to lead 6-5 and served for the match, getting three chances to close it at 40-love. As she walked to the sideline, Vinci looked at the line judge who made the call and smiled sarcastically, giving him a thumb’s up and applauding with her racket.
Angelique Kerber, of Germany, celebrates after defeating Petra Kvitova, of the Czech Republic, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in NY.
She said she has a recurring wrist injury and was advised by her doctor to take time off.
Roberta Vinci, of Italy, reacts during her match with Lesia Tsurenko, of Ukraine, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in NY.
This season has been a breakthrough of sorts for both the youngster and the veteran, who meet Tuesday at the U.S. Open with at least one Frenchman guaranteed a spot in the semifinals.
Monfils will meet the victor of Novak Djokovic versus Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – worryingly, he has never beaten the world No 1 Djokovic in 12 attempts.
Monfils stood extremely deep past the base-line on Pouille’s serve, forcing the world number 25 to make tough choices.

On the women’s side, in a contest of unseeded players, the two-time U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki plays Anastasija Sevastova, who had never won four straight matches at any major until now. It’s hard to have high expectations on a surface that has always been tough for him.
