The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ were launched at Samsung’s Unpacked event and will go on sale on August 21.

The phone will support WiFi calling in high quality when connected. Although the phone is slightly smaller than the Note 4, it maintains a large 5.7 inch screen.

The rest of the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ specifications include the same Samsung-designed octa-core processor used in the existing Galaxy S6, with 32GB or 64GB of integrated storage and, for the first time, 4GB of RAM. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ will be available in the UK in September but the Galaxy Note 5, an update to the Note range, will only be available to North American and selected Asian markets.

EE Devices director Sharon Meadows said: “Its unique dual-curved display, powerful processing capabilities and superfast 4G speeds push the boundaries of smartphone innovation”. A fingerprint sensor is also included. And running on these new devices is an improved TouchWiz interface that brings to the table a host of new features and upgrades.

“It boiled down to a business prioritisation more than anything else”, said David Kang, vice president of online at Samsung Mobile. With the Edge devices, Samsung has succeeded in creating a super-slim bezel, so the display feels like it stretches right to the edges of the screen.

In that respect, the stylus input, or S-Pen, as Samsung calls it, is also dramatically better. In terms of design, the Note 5 is very similar to the Galaxy S6 and the curved back makes it easier to hold the device. As well as calling, texting and emailing, you can now send pokes, pictures and emoji to these contacts with a simple tap.It has also added an “Apps Edge”, that provides quick access to all your favourite applications. This newly introduced unit now comes with a completely metal and glass design that closely resembles the Samsung Galaxy S6’s look.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 feature Samsung’s fast wired and wireless charging technology and the embedded wireless charging technology is compatible with virtually any wireless pad available today.

We’ll find out when we properly review the S6 Edge+, but our gut feeling is that the two phones will offer roughly the same amount of usage per charge. The phones will officially hit the shelves in stores on August 21.
