Gallery: Meet the 2016 presidential and vice presidential debate moderators
The first Clinton-Trump debate will take place September 26 at Hofstra University of NY, moderated by NBC “Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt, the commission said in a statement.

As is traditional, a vice presidential debate will be held between Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine and Trump VP nominee Mike Pence. CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Martha Raddatz, chief global affairs correspondent and co-anchor of ABC’s “This Week”, will moderate the second debate, set for October 9 at Washington University in St. Louis.
– October 19 at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
All debates will be run from 9-10:30 p.m. Eastern Time without commercial breaks.
The Commission on Presidential Debates announced today the moderators for the three presidential and one vice presidential debate this fall.
We understand the critical role the debate process plays in informing voters about each candidate’s position on the issues that impact them directly, such as jobs and the economy and health, among others.
Clinton has said she will take part in all three debates.
Those complaints, however, were overshadowed by a highly publicized feud between Fox News’ Megyn Kelly and Trump after a primary debate in March. Pollsters reported a resulting sharp shift in public opinion, said Alan Schroeder, author of Presidential Debates: Forty Years of High-Risk TV.
C-Span’s Steve Scully will be backup moderator for all the debates.
Trump made it more challenging than ever. Randy Falco said he wanted to express his “disappointment, and frankly disbelief” that no Latino journalist was selected as a moderator. Yet Trump’s aggressive attacks on the media and complaints about unfair treatment effectively guaranteed that the moderators would come under scrutiny from conservatives. A joint poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News showed 56 percent of Americans have an “unfavorable impression” of Clinton, the worst mark of her political career, and 63 percent feel the same way about Trump.

Pressed on what could cause him to change his mind, Trump replied, “Hurricanes, natural disaster …” before trailing off. “The job involves doing many things, which is why this is so hard”, former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno said on “Smerconish” last week. The first one, which was presented on August 6, 2015, delivered a record breaking 24 million viewers and still stands as the most-watched non-sports cable telecast of all time. “Not everybody can do it”, Sesno said. It will be the first time that the general election campaign’s much-anticipated first debate won’t be moderated by the now-retired Jim Lehrer of PBS since 1984. The town hall event will take place Sunday, Oct. 9 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
