[GALLERY] STAR TREK BEYOND Premiere In San Diego

Fortunately, Star Trek Beyond manages to go, er, beyond those expectations – it’s arguably the most fun of the three movies set in the alternate (and newly named) Kelvin Timeline that began with J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek in 2009 and Star Trek Into Darkness.

The cutaway, which shows Kirk staring into a closet hung with several identical replacement tops, is priceless.

Abrams said: ‘There’s no replacing him. “There’s no recasting”, Abrams confirmed to Postmedia Network.

With the crew stranded on a unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy who has a well-earned hatred of the Federation and what it stands for.

Perhaps the issue lies in the script, with writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung halting character development.

Jaylah, as that rebel is called, is a welcome female addition to the predominantly male cast.

What would he like to see in a future Star Wars Anthology film? Not just as a warrior, but as a character, she brings new hope and life to this tried-and-true story – not to mention some cool new technology. Krall destroys the Enterprise with his cool-looking swarming weapons (this is now the third Trek movie to feature the destruction of the Enterprise), stranding the crew on an abandoned planet, where most of the movie takes place.

“It is devastating to lose a member of your family, and we were so shocked”, Urban solemnly expressed, before his co-star Pegg jumped in.

While it will be sad to see a “Trek” without one of our favorite shipmates aboard, we can’t help but be excited to see Kirk and company explore more odd new worlds on the big screen. With its talk of “gravitational slipstreams” and the like, “Beyond” is no exception. “This is an inclusive universe in every way, not just fictionally but actually”. The problem comes when the ship is attacked by a malevolent alien named Krall (Idris Elba).

Star Trek Beyond is finally making its cinematic debut this week, and Paramount are so confident in the film that they’ve already green-lit Star Trek 4. Quinto reflected on original Spock actor Nimoy, while filmmaker J.J. Abrams led a moment of silence in honor of Yelchin, who plays navigator Pavel Chekov in the rebooted “Trek” movies.
