‘Game of Thrones’ breaks Emmys record in 2015

That number absolutely destroys the record for most wins in one year, which was previously held by The West Wing with eight.

“HBO, in their wisdom, paired a couple of novice producers with people of experience”, said co-creator David Benioff. Either way, it’s hard to begrudge the show for winning this particular race: Downton Abbey, House of Cards, and Homeland were all worse last season; Orange Is the New Black is still in the dramedy netherworld, no matter what the new Emmy rules say; Better Call Saul is just getting started; and Mad Men… well, yes, it would have been nice to see Mad Men win for its final season. Tracy Morgan presented the award, his first public appearance since he was injured in a vehicle crash in June of previous year. And while there’s no way to know if procedural changes in the voting smoothed the way for “Thrones'” victory, the fact that the mega-hit finally made it over the wall – sweetened by its Sunday-night wins for directing, writing and Peter Dinklage – clearly seemed overdue. It won Best Drama four years in a row, a Louis-Dreyfus-ian level of domination!

If “Modern Family’s” best-comedy run had to come to an end, “Veep” – which had what was likely its best season – felt like a much safer choice to swing the axe than “Transparent“, which would have represented an enormous coup for Amazon’s fledgling original-series efforts.

They handed out dozens of trophies at this year’s Emmy Awards, but the real victor was HBO. The show received an astounding 24 nominations according to CNN.

“I had to try and contain my excitement for that moment”. “And thank you for watching”.

Commentary on transgender rights, sexism and ageism recurred throughout the evening, beginning with jokes in Samberg’s opening monologue and culminating in Viola Davis’ acceptance speech for her performance in How to Get Away with Murder.

Accepting her award, she said: “The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity”.

Allison Janney won the only comedy Emmy that didn’t go to Transparent or Veep, taking home an award for her supporting role in the CBS series Mom.
