Game Of Thrones Breaks Record At The 2016 Emmys

“Game of Thrones” won separate awards for best writing in a TV series and best drama. These three, along with nine more in other minor categories take the award tally of Game of Thrones to 38, edging out sitcom Fraiser to become the most awarded fictional television series ever.

The cast of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” pose backstage with their award for Oustanding Drama Series at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, California U.S., September 18.

Amy Schumer received a fan letter from Jimmy’s mom (in the brown paper bag with her PBJ) going on about how much she wished Amy had hosted the award show and going on and on… but she was talking about Amy Poehler, not Amy Schumer.

Last night was also memorable for a number of Brits who picked up awards.

“How much free media can any one person get?” asked the producer in a press conference after the Emmys, implying that just by bringing up Trump’s name, Kimmel and others helped the GOP nominee’s cause.

Jeffrey Tambor, who took the outstanding comedy actor gong for the second year in a row, made a heart-warming call for Hollywood to provide more work for transgender actors.

“Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her fifth straight Emmy on Sunday for her role in the satirical White House comedy on a night when politics played large in the midst of an extraordinary 2016 USA election campaign.

The 68th Primetime Emmys were short on big surprises – Game of Thrones, Veep, The People v. O.J. Simpson won big as expected – but there were plenty of minor snubs and happy surprises.

Louis-Dreyfus was on fire, channeling Selina Meyer in the cleverest joke from the weak opening skit (“LBJ – that was my nickname during my high-school Spanish class”) and continuing the anti-Trumpism Kimmel introduced during her acceptance speech: “Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary”. “This is other-izing with a capital O. He needs to be called out every chance we get for being one of most risky monsters to ever approach our lifetimes”, Soloway said. Her father just passed away last Friday and she dedicated her win to him.

The best television movie honour was given to “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride”. Winning for comedy series writing, the Master co-creator pointed out that Italian Americans can see themselves in movies such as The Godfather and Rocky, while Asian Americans have mostly stereotypical representations such as Sixteen Candles’ Long Duk Dong. Malek won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmys for his role. “After five episodes airing, they chose to keep us for another year”, Anderson said backstage.

This year’s British winners included Dame Maggie Smith, who won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey.

Kimmel even made comic hay after his late-night ABC show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, lost out to John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” as outstanding variety series. Jimmy Kimmel has a net worth of an estimated $35 million.
